In 2021, with the enterprise social media management market exceeding $9B, Twitter faced a critical turning point in serving its power users. As Lead Designer, I was tasked with transforming TweetDeck's aging infrastructure into a premium enterprise solution, addressing the growing frustration of professional publishers who generated 70% of Twitter's top-performing content. The challenge was clear: create a robust professional tool that could compete with established players like Hootsuite while unlocking Twitter's first significant revenue stream since advertising.
Role
Design Director / Principal
Team size
1 Staff - 2 Sr. Designers
Duration
1 Quarter
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Success required tight alignment across teams. I established a collaborative framework:
Weekly sync with Engineering leads to assess technical feasibility
Bi-weekly strategy sessions with Product and Business stakeholders
Monthly reviews with Executive team to ensure business alignment
Regular user testing sessions with our target customers
This framework enabled rapid decision-making while maintaining strategic alignment across organizations.
Design Process
Rather than following a linear approach, we adopted a parallel track strategy. While the core team focused on immediate improvements, we maintained a separate exploration track for long-term innovation. This balanced quick wins with revolutionary changes.
Key activities included:
User journey mapping with professional publishers
Design sprints for complex features
Regular prototype testing with beta partners
Iterative refinement based on usage data
Impact & Results
The transformation exceeded expectations across all key metrics. Professional publishers saw a 40% reduction in workflow time, while engagement rates increased by 25%. Most importantly, we achieved a 40% growth in agency partnerships, validating our enterprise-first approach.
Beyond metrics, we established Twitter as a serious player in the professional publishing space, creating a new revenue stream and setting the foundation for future enterprise products.
